Also included are instructions of how to make a ‘Fucntion Machine’ and what is needed to make one. These cards are designed to be used with a Function Machine, however you may have another use in mind… Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. What’s it for? As said, these CVC cards have been designed to be printed double-sided on card to use with the ‘Function Machine’ (~instructions of how to make one of these included) to practise sounding out simple CVC (Phase 2 phonics) words - Learners read each word then push the card into the top function machine slot and can see if they are correct when the picture pops out of the slot below. This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently. How to use it? An adult needs to print these card (double-sided) onto card and and pre-cut the cards into x10 separate rectangle cards. The set of cards can then be placed on a carpet/table top, positioned with a ‘Function Machine’ for learners to use on their own or perhaps with adult support (initially). These Christmas Alphabet cards have been designed to be printed double-sided on card to use with the ‘Function Machine’ (instructions of how to make one of these included) to practise identifying the initial sound of x26 images - all Christmas themed. Providing learners with a fun opportunity to practise their sound knowledge linked to Christmas. This activity has been designed to be a simple, interactive, predictable activity to promote independence and consolidate learning. This activity is ideal for individuals to be getting on with independently. How to use it? An adult needs to print these card (double-sided) onto card and and pre-cut the cards into x26 separate rectangle cards (x27 if using both versions of the ‘k’/’king’ cards) The set of cards can then be placed on a table top, positioned with a ‘Function Machine’ for learners to use on their own or perhaps with adult support (initially). Cards may be ordered a - z or given to learners mixed up and learners could order these themselves. Learners look at each image and say this out loud. They then identify (verbally) the initial sound of this word e.g. for the first letter of the alphabet the learner would say “Advent Calendar” and then “a” (for ‘Advent’). Learners then post the card (image side up) and when it pops out of the lower slot they can see if they were correct… Resource Details… The pictures included use words with clear initial sounds. Some images/words may be completely new to learners - an opportunity to expand their ‘Christmas vocabulary’. What’s included? This download includes three A4, portrait pdf sheet to practise reading and writing CVC words within Phase 2. Who’s it for? This resource has been designed for early years children, pupils in years one as well as older students needing additional learning support. Resource Details The layout includes x2 wheels, one for the ‘front’ (wheel 1) and one for the back - with the x2 sets of vowels on (wheel 2). Once assembled (according to instructions included on the pdf) the CVC Phonics Wheel can be turned to reveal one vowel in the centre of the two consonants displayed/written on the front of the wheel. The wheel can be turned clockwise or anticlockwise, the direction doesn’t matter. Some words will be ‘real’ e.g. den//hen/men/pen and some words will not be real/will be ‘nonsense’ words e.g. len/ren - these can be written on page 3 - there is space for x10 real and x10 nonsense words to be written here and a clear space for learners to write their name (at the base of the sheet). Suggestion For older, more able learners this activity could be linked to looking up new words in the dictionary to find out if they are/are not real words and if they are ‘real’ words e.g. ‘fen’ find out what their meanings are (Fen is used to refer to an area of low, flat, wet land, especially in the east of England).
